A Braid
One strand – a strangled scream
contorting my face
as murder fells my children,
a scream heavy with frustration
with a world that eats lies
like a child eating ice-cream.
The second strand – hugs and smiles
of family around a festive table,
the joy of cradling a newborn,
and the laughter and sobs
rub one against the other,
and merge, entwined.
The third strand – walking the dog,
hanging laundry in the sun
greeting neighbors
and the three strands together,
crossing one another like a Sabbath loaf,
the layer upon layer of my life.

Two poems from my book, Cradled in God's Arms have been reprinted with permission in Celebrating Shabbos, edited by Rosally Saltsman and Robin Meyerson. I highly recommend this inspiring collection of seventy true stories featuring how Shabbat enriches our lives.

Three of my poems have been reprinted with permission in What Do We Know? - The Carlebach Anthology, edited by Rabbi Joseph Schonwald with Reuven Goldfarb. I highly recommend this collection of articles which include the theological, philosophical, political, historical, personal, mystical and musical aspects, an interview with Reb Shlomo, a sample of his teachings, and the moving eulogy (translated into English) delivered by Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau at Har Menuchot, Jerusalem, in October 1994.
