WHAT'S NEW
The poetry reading and launch for The Deronda Review took place on the 24th April, organized by the editors, Esther Cameron and Mindy Aber Barad, and Judy Belsky.
Fifteen readers participated in this stimulating and inspiring evening, from as far north as Nazareth Elite, and from Tel Aviv, Bet El, Ramat Bet Shemesh, Moshav Bet Meir in the Judean Hills, and from Efrat and Elazar in Gush Etzion, as well as from Jerusalem. First-time participants in The Deronda Review’s reading included Felice Miryam Kahn Zisken, Prof. Don Kristt, Tzippy Levin Byron, Prof. Michael E. Stone and Birgit Talmon.
Judy Belsky, whose magnificent, vibrant paintings were exhibited in the Israel Center’s hall where the reading was held, read excerpts from her forthcoming memoir, as well as “A Garden in Jerusalem,” the full-page poem that appeared in The Deronda Review.
Meira Raanan spoke about her husband, Yoram’s art on the front and back covers of this latest issue. “When we saw flames devouring my husband’s studio [that was made of wood, in wildfires that swept through the Judean Hills in November 2016 in which he lost close to two thousand original paintings] and he lost forty years of his work, he said, ‘Only good will come from this.’”
Under Yoram Raanan’s painting, “Phoenix Arising 2,” that graces the front cover, she wrote: “About three months after the fire… Yoram started painting in oil in earth tones… as well as iridescent gold on black panels. Painting in gold is about the transformation of fire into redemption, light coming out of darkness, transformation of tragedy….”
On the back cover, under Yoram’s painting, “Wings of the Earth,” she wrote: “…Wings are a symbol of spirituality and here the very earth seems to be rising up to heaven.”
We too, audience and participants, were raised on wings this evening, several inches closer to heaven.
